Ministry of Agriculture recommendations are that Hawthorn hedging is best planted in a double row with the rows 30cm ( 12 inches ) apart, plants to be 30cm ( 12inches ) apart in their rows and staggered ( i.e. 6 plants per metre of hedge ) However, using our robust 1-1 and 1+1 transplants with more fibrous roots this planting density can be reduced by approximately one-third. For a natural effect, mix at least 5 percent other shrubs suitable for the local environment, and/or to attract wildlife such as butterflies. |
